RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Theory
Course topics include:
- position fixing
- course shaping and plotting
- tidal knowledge
- use of almanac and admiralty publications
- electronic position finding equipment
- taking and interpreting forecasts
- plotting weather systems
- weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
- collision regulations
- customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad
It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to the advanced navigation techniques. No mathematical knowledge, other than simple arithmetic, is expected.
Options
The Club runs two versions of the course
Option 1 - Our traditional evening long course for Yachtmaster will be presented this autumn using an online platform starting on November 2nd, and continuing for about 22 weeks at convenient times to suit participants. You will see and hear your Instructor, and he will see and hear you and be able to interact with you individually. The Instructor will be able to assist you with your chartwork, he will be able to see the work you are doing, and provide the same assistance as in a real physical seminar.
As the course progresses it may be possible for some classes to be held at the clubhouse.

The price of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Option 1 - Long course is:
Club members £285.00
Non-members £395.00
Option 2 - Accelerated Course - about 10 weeks - from 3rd February until 7th April, giving a nominal 44 hours tuition on 10 Wednesdays from 1900-2100 and five Saturday classes from 0930-1630 spaced at fortnightly intervals. A pre-course supper is available on Wednesdays (needs to be pre-booked at the Club's restaurant) and lunch is provided on Saturdays.
The Saturday classes will take place on 6th & 20th February, 6th & 20th March and 3rd April.

Students need to have:
- Course plotter and nautical dividers kit (available at Little Ship Club for £20)
- 2B pencils
- Eraser
- Pencil sharpener
- The Course Leader may suggest additional reading material.
